reconcile work freetime howto francinesplaceblog

I started this blog in 2012, when I still was an university student (ha!), but I decided
to put more and more dedication in it in 2014, the year I graduated.
Finally exams were over, so my days were all like waking up in the morning, replying to
job offers then having lot of free time for doing what I liked most. Like blogging, for example.
What a life.
Yes, because a job is so important, of course, but doing what we love isn't less
essential.
So, my posts became more like I wanted them to be and my blog took the DIY and
 lifestyle direction you see now.
I also restarted having piano lessons with a teacher (because before all, I am a pianist!)
and I really couldn't be happier.
In October, 2014, I found a part-time job, I worked in the mornings and it was quite
cool, because I had a salary and all the afternoons for me. Double win!
But, as it often happens, cool things are not necessarily forever, so one year later I was at home again.
This is why, the last months, I found myself with whole days of free time, but no job.
Pretty nice, for a short time, unless you have to pay bills for your house (or your piano lessons...).
Luckily, after million replies to job opportunities and résumé sendings, I found a new
employment, but it is a full-time one. That means ending my working day at 6 pm.
And that, before all, means reorganizing completely my life.
So, today, I would share with you few, personal, ways to reconcile work time
and blog (or free) time, because our beloved activities don't have to be put aside,
in any way!
I am at the beginning of this new life, so I am more than open to read your suggestions
about how you can do both without stressing yourself too much (or better, at all!).
Consider this post as a free-writing space, I'd like to know your point of view!
//
Poi, in Ottobre, sempre 2014, ho trovato un lavoro part-time; avevo uno stipendio
e tutti i pomeriggi liberi.

1)
BUY A PLANNER (OR BETTER, TWO) //
COMPRATE UN'AGENDA (O MEGLIO, DUE)
It could seem weird, but it's not. A planner is life-saving, two are even better!
I already told you here how much writing down commitments is helpful for me, I use
the calendar I have at home to memorize
events and couple-commitments, more I have 2 different planners only for myself.
One is a daily one, where I write down every single thing to do about job, bills, events, etc.
It is always in my bag, wherever I go.
The other is a weekly planner that I use for my free time. On it, I schedule blog posts,
collaborations, inspirations etc.
Having two different planners will help you to keep working and free time separated.
//
appuntare ispirazioni ecc.
Avere due agende vi aiuterà a tenere ben separati lavoro e tempo libero.

2)
REORGANIZE YOUR ACTIVITIES (AND BE READY FOR SOME SACRIFICE)
// RIORGANIZZATE LE ATTIVITA' (E SIATE PRONTE A QUALCHE SACRIFICIO)
When it's possible, try to reorganize your activities, not to delete them.
Doing what we like it is not only "free time", it is part of our life and personality.
We are what we do and, if we delete what we like, we won't be happy.
Doing this could bring us to make some sacrifice, for example I moved my piano
lessons from Friday afternoon to... Friday evening. From 8 to 9 pm.
This means that our pizza and movie night will wait, but it will be worth it.
//

3)
FOCUS ON YOUR PRIORITIES AND DON'T OVERDO //
CONCENTRATEVI SULLE PRIORITA' E NON STRAFATE
Having less time for yourself means that you can't do everything, unless you want
to be the stressed (and tired) version of yourself in less than one month. Okay, thanks god we have
weekends, but we can't concentrate gym, pilates, painting class, photography class,
happy hour with friends, dinner with boyfriend in only two days, it could be
just counter-productive. We need to ask ourselves what we really like to do, which
are the activities we want to go on (or start) and which aren't for us.
I know that it could seem like a falilure, but trust me, it is like a closet cleaning:
after it you will feel lighter and happier.
Talking about blog, for example, I opted for quality instead of quantity. So I am
planning about one post a week, so that for me preparing it can be a delightful moment,
not a breathless race.
//
sarebbe solo controproducente.
Dobbiamo invece chiederci cosa davvero ci piace fare, quali attività vogliamo continuare

4)
WEEKENDS ARE FOR PLANNING //
I WEEKEND SONO PER PIANIFICARE
When it comes to free time, weekends are like the Holy Grail: we think we have the world
in our hands!
However, the fact is that, as I said before, we can't do million things during two days, so
even during our days off, we have to choose what we want to do.
And, between all the nice things we can opt for, there is one, less funny, but decisive that
we can't forget about: planning. Yes, on weekends, we have to take few time to plan
the week ahead, for example preparing the posts or at least writing down the content or taking
the pictures. It can take one hour or more, but it will help us to have everything set
on the working days.
//
Già, durante i weekend,
giorni a venire.

5)
DO WORK AND PLEASURE ONE SINGLE THING //
FARE DEL LAVORO E DEL PIACERE UNA COSA SOLA
Okay, this is a bit dreamy but hey, somebody made it!
Making your passion your job, today, is not impossible. It requires lot of dedication,
sacrifice and no-days (and yes, money), but I can't imagine nothing better that it.
I am starting this new working experience but I can't deny that my dream is
working for myself, one day. Everything allowing, of course.
So, we need to be realistic: a job makes us eat and, unless we understand that we
can work for ourselves and it can be the right moment to leave a secure employment,
we must go on with our "double life". If we put our heart in it, maybe one day life
will pay back.
Meanwhile, we can try to like our job and the growing opportunities it gives.
//

6)
DON'T FORGET THAT FREE TIME IS ALSO DOING NOTHING //
NON DIMENTICATE CHE TEMPO LIBERO SIGNIFICA ANCHE NON FARE NULLA
It can be the hardest part, if we have less time to do what we want, but it is also
the most important: free time is also doing nothing, laying on our couch,
talking with people we love, drinking tea while reading a book.
Because time spent like that won't only recharge our batteries, but also our soul.
//

  3. I really enjoyed this post and I find it very useful, too. Yes, managing and balancing everything we must and want to do is not easy at all. Blogging often feels like a double job and takes a lot of time so sometimes I do feel overwhelmed. However, it's really about the priorities and making pauses when necessary. We can't skip doing what must be done but the rest is up to us, whether it's a piano class(how cool!), blogging or simply doing nothing ;) I wish you good luck on your new job :)

    1. Yes, I think it so! This is why it's so important for us choosing what we want to do. But we should never give up on our dreams, so if we hope to "work" with our blog, one day, we must accept some sacrifice on our way :)

  11. Wonderful post!! Love all the tips. "We are what we do and if we delete what we like, we won't be happy." So true!! For me, I need to slow down more often and do nothing/relax. I often find myself frazzled because I'm trying to do all the things on top of my full-time job. Thanks for sharing--it's a good time for me to think about these things! xo
